The quality of a product largely depends on the materials used in its manufacturing. For inflatable products, the most frequently mentioned materials are PVC and TPU. Today, we’ll explain the differences between these two materials.
First, let’s briefly introduce PVC. PVC stands for polyvinyl chloride, a synthetic polymer. Industrial production of PVC began as early as the 1930s, making it a widely used material with mature processing technology. The residual content of the carcinogenic monomer vinyl chloride (VCM) in PVC is minimal after processing, posing no harm to human health.
TPU, on the other hand, can be considered a rising star compared to PVC and is often used as an upgraded alternative. TPU stands for thermoplastic polyurethane elastomer, another synthetic polymer. However, TPU is recognized as an environmentally friendly, high-performance new polymer material and has become one of the fastest-growing thermoplastic materials.
Now that we’ve covered the background of these two materials, let’s delve into their key differences in terms of properties. PVC, as a widely used plastic, has many advantages. It offers good electrical insulation, making it suitable for low-frequency insulating materials, and boasts excellent chemical stability. However, its drawbacks are also notable. PVC products often emit a strong, pungent odor and have poor thermal stability. Prolonged heating can cause decomposition, releasing HCl gas and discoloring the PVC. As a result, its application range is limited, with a typical operating temperature range of -15°C to 55°C.
TPU has its own shortcomings, such as poor moldability and a tendency for transparent TPU to develop a yellowish tint over time. However, these flaws do not overshadow its strengths, which explain why TPU is a worthy alternative to PVC. TPU exhibits exceptional tensile strength, durability, and resistance to aging, making it a well-established eco-friendly material. It outperforms other plastics in terms of strength, toughness, abrasion resistance, cold resistance, oil resistance, water resistance, aging resistance, and weather resistance. Additionally, TPU offers high waterproofing, moisture permeability, windproofing, cold resistance, antibacterial properties, mildew resistance, insulation, UV resistance, and energy release, among many other outstanding features.
