Sourcing Ocean Balls from China: What Buyers Should Check Before Paying

Ocean balls, also called ball pit balls or pit balls, and known in Chinese as “bobo qiu”, look like the simplest product on earth. A hollow plastic sphere, usually PE, somewhere between 5.5 cm and 7.5 cm across. How complicated can it be.

Plenty complicated, as anyone who has opened a container and found a few thousand balls that smell like a tyre shop will tell you. Here is what I would check before spending money on ocean balls from China.

Two provinces do most of the work: Zhejiang and Guangdong.

In Zhejiang, the cluster sits around Wenzhou, especially Yongjia county’s Qiaoxia town, which has been turning out playground and kindergarten equipment for decades. Yiwu handles a lot of the trading and small-order volume, and Ningbo adds blow molding capacity on top.

Guangdong is the bigger picture. Shantou’s Chenghai district produces roughly 70% of the world’s plastic toys, and Guangdong’s toy exports reached 897 billion yuan in 2025, the highest of any province. Dongguan, Jiangmen and Guangzhou’s Panyu district fill in the rest, with Panyu holding a large share of China’s playground equipment suppliers.

So when a supplier tells you their factory is “in China”, the useful follow-up question is which of these clusters. The answer says a lot about their supply chain.

Ocean balls are blow molded from plastic pellets, and those pellets come in two very different grades.

Virgin material is fresh PE resin straight from the petrochemical plant. Clean, consistent, no surprises.

Recycled material is a different story. Workshops collect scrap plastic, grind it, wash it, melt it and re-pelletize it. Some of that is clean industrial scrap; a good deal of it is not. To stretch the material further, some plants mix in talc or calcium carbonate filler. Chenghai drew national attention back in 2012 when a TV exposé showed manufacturers using this kind of second-hand plastic, known locally as “er liao”, in children’s products. The rules tightened afterwards, but the practice never fully disappeared, and ocean balls are exactly the type of low-price, high-volume item where it still turns up. The same goes for plenty of workshops in Zhejiang.

Both kinds of factory exist, and both will quote you a price. The gap between them is where beginners lose money.

  1. Price

Virgin PE resin costs more per tonne than recycled pellets, and that difference lands straight on the invoice. This is the fastest signal, and also the easiest to misread. Cheap is not automatically bad and expensive is not automatically good, but if one quote comes in 30% or 40% under everyone else’s for the same specification, you are almost certainly looking at recycled material. Get several quotes, and the outliers will identify themselves.

  1. Firmness

Pick up a ball and squeeze it.

A virgin-material ball holds its round shape. Press it and it springs back flat, with no dent left behind. Tip a hundred of them into a pit and they settle in a neat, level layer.

Recycled balls behave differently. The plastic has been through the heat cycle at least once already, so the molecular chains are shorter and the wall is weaker. Squeeze one and it dents, wobbles, feels floppy. Under the weight of a thousand balls the bottom layer collapses and the whole pit goes flat. If the sample in your hand feels like a deflated ping-pong ball, you already know what you are getting.

  1. Smell

This one works every time. Open a bag of virgin-material balls and you smell almost nothing, maybe a faint clean-plastic note. Nothing you would object to.

Open a bag of recycled balls and it hits you right away: sharp, chemical, slightly burnt. Part of that comes from the pigments, most of it from impurities and additives that survived the recycling process. The smell gets worse in a sealed container, and worse again in a hot warehouse or a parked car. No certificate will fix that smell. Use your nose before you sign anything.

  1. Buy through a trading company, not at the factory gate

There are hundreds of ocean ball workshops across the two provinces. Some run genuinely good lines on virgin resin. Many do not. If you are not physically in the region and not paying for factory audits, your odds of landing on the wrong one are high. Opening a B2B directory and sorting by lowest price is a reliable way to find them.

Trading companies live on relationships. They deal with dozens of factories across the clusters, so they know which plant runs virgin resin, which one blends in recycled pellets, and which one switches material depending on order size. That knowledge is their actual product. A good trading company filters the weak workshops off your list before you ever see a quote, and they can arrange samples, consolidate orders and handle the paperwork. You pay a small margin for that. It is nearly always cheaper than one failed shipment.

While you are asking, get the test reports too. Ocean balls sold into Europe need EN71 testing, which covers physical hazards, flammability and heavy metal migration, plus CE marking under the Toy Safety Directive. The US market expects ASTM F963 compliance and a CPC certificate from a CPSC-accepted lab. On plastic balls, the tests that fail most often are phthalates and heavy metals, and both trace back to one root cause: cheap recycled material.

Our site sells inflatable products. Bouncy castles, slides, ball pits, inflatable furniture for malls and party halls.

We also source ocean balls for customers who ask. Same clusters, same suppliers we already work with, and we know what to look for, because we buy the same materials ourselves.

Ocean balls are a natural add-on to any inflatable. A bouncy castle with an attached ball pit keeps children in one place far longer than an empty one, and the pairing is the easiest upsell in the category. If you are ordering inflatables, tell us the ball count you want and we will quote the two together.

Buying ocean balls from China is not difficult. Buying good ones takes a little effort.

Ask more questions than you think are necessary. Sample three suppliers, not one. Squeeze the balls, smell the balls, compare quotes on identical specifications, and stay suspicious of the cheapest number on the page. Then compare everything one more time.

Ask more, compare more, think more. That is how you end up with a pit full of balls that still look and smell right after a year of children jumping on them.
