According to Indian government officials, as of May 31st, at least 33 people are suspected to have died from heatstroke in the northeastern state of Bihar, the eastern state of Odisha, and the northern state of Uttar Pradesh. The hot weather is expected to continue in these regions until June 1st.

Based on local government sources, on May 30th, 14 people in Bihar are suspected to have died from heatstroke, including 10 election workers. In Rourkela, Odisha, a public hospital reported 10 suspected heatstroke deaths. The local government has urged people to avoid going outdoors between 11 am to 3 pm when temperatures are at their peak.

On May 31st, at least 9 election workers died in Uttar Pradesh. The director of a local hospital said these people were brought in with high fever symptoms, likely due to heatstroke, and at least 23 more election workers are still under treatment.

India has been experiencing extreme heat waves in recent days. On May 29th, the Delhi region recorded a "record high" temperature of 52.9°C, although the meteorological department stated this data is still pending verification.

In India, a heat wave is declared when a region's temperature is 4.5°C to 6.4°C higher than normal. The India Meteorological Department reported that while temperatures in northwest and central India are expected to decrease in the coming days, the eastern regions may continue to experience the heatwave for another two days.

Typically, India's hot season runs from April to June, with the arrival of the monsoon rains in July providing some cooling relief. Over the past 10 years, the weather during this period has become increasingly hotter, and some experts attribute this to climate change.
